Techniques to Remember

When we are in the comfortable conclave of Christian fellowship, it is relatively easy to be holy, to conduct our lives in the fear of God, and to focus our minds on the Saviour (at least externally). But when we are out in the world, when we are in the minority, it is different, isn’t it?

If you want to stay clean, even when you are walking alone in the dark, low-ceilinged coal mine of the corrupt and secular culture, you need to remember a few practical things. Four come to mind.

First, pay close attention to what you look at. This takes us back to verse 13 of 1 Peter 1, where we are told to gird our minds for action, keep sober in spirit, and fix our hope completely on the grace that’s revealed in Jesus Christ.

  • Our eyes seem to be the closest connection to our minds.
  • Through our eyes we bring in information and visual images.
  • Through our eyes we feed our imaginations.
  • Through our eyes we focus on things that are alluring and attractive — and, do not kid yourself, extremely pleasurable for a while. It is the deadly apple of the devil.

By faith Moses gave up the passing pleasures of sin to walk with the people of God.

Hebrews 11:24–26

The cosmos offers pleasures, no doubt about it, but they are passing.

If then you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on the things that are on earth.

Colossians 3:1–2

Question for Reflection

How do you use your eyes? What do you look at intently? Think about it.
